Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the primary message Newborn Lifeline Network would like to express?
That there are safe, legal and often anonymous alternatives to unsafely abandoning newborns and that we are here and ready to help.
- How many babies are unsafely abandoned each year?
There are over 100 newborns found each year after being unsafely abandoned, but we believe that is a small representation of the number actually abandoned. That number is based solely on newspaper accounts of infants who were discovered.
- Are calls to your hotline confidential?
Yes, all caller information is kept strictly confidential. We do track statistical information in order to learn more about this issue, but it is completely unattached to any personal information.
- Are the laws all the same?
No, each state law has its own requirements. That is why we want to speak with individuals before they use the law; it allows us an opportunity to make sure they understand the details of their state’s law.
- How many states have laws?
All 50 states have “safe haven” laws at this time.
- How can you adopt an abandoned baby?
To adopt a baby that has been safely abandoned a person can contact their local Division of Families and Children.
- How many calls has Newborn Lifeline received?
Our volunteer representatives served an average of 1000 callers each year. What we have learned is that when given the support and information that they need our callers make safe decisions for themselves and their newborns.
